GlaxoSmithKline has taken voluntary, precautionary action to end the manufacture and supply of Poligrip products containing zinc, while the company works to reformulate the products.
GSK wrote the following on its Web site:”We are taking these actions because we have become aware of potential health problems associated with the long-term excessive use of our zinc-containing denture adhesive products.”
While the products are safe when used as directed, some consumers have been known to use excessive amounts. The company will transition to zinc-free versions of all affected variants.
An estimated 30 million Americans wear dentures and use products such as Poligrip.
Several lawsuits alleging nerve damage and blood injuries from high levels of zinc contained in the products are pending trial.
