Hazing-Related Wrongful Death Lawsuit Settled

Comments Off

A confidential settlement has been reached in a wrongful death lawsuit against the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.

The suit, brought by the parents of Tyler Cross, 18, a University of Texas fraternity pledge who fell to his death from a dormitory balcony, was first filed in November 2006.

The freshman was found on a sidewalk near University Towers, said police. According to an autopsy report, Cross had a blood alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit for driving in Texas.

The suit stated that in the days leading up to Cross’ death, he had been subjected to hazing that included sleep deprivation, being forced to consume large amounts of alcohol, beatings and “other acts of assault or battery.”

Last year, four former Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity members were sentenced for their involvement in hazing pledges.
