FDA To Address Radiation Concerns

Comments Off

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is holding two days of public meetings this week to discuss whether Americans are being exposed to too much radiation during tests such as CT scans.

A CT scan — also called computerized tomography — combines a series of X-ray views taken from many different angles to see cross-sectional images or ‘slices’ of the areas of the body. Machines use radiation to generate the images.

Some health experts are pushing for the manufacturers of such devices to be under stricter guidelines for the level of radiation the machines can produce.

The FDA says imaging tests are one of the top contributors of radiation exposure among Americans and could potentially increase the lifetime risk for cancer.
